May Theme: Creating Supply Chain Agility with CertainT®
By Surabhi Mukhi, APDN Textiles Project Manager
The current business environment can be characterized by constant change, shorter product lifecycles, and increased demand uncertainty. As these conditions have become the norm, companies and researchers alike have turned to the concept of agility in their quest for a sustainable source of competitive advantage. Consequently, supply chain agility has emerged as the dominant competitive vehicle for organizations operating in such an uncertain and ever-changing business environment.
Supply chain agility can be described as a company’s ability to quickly adjust tactics and operations within its supply chain.
Let us uncover the anatomy of supply chain agility to better understand how companies can develop this important ability.
Join the Molecular Tagged Universe with CertainT®
This month we welcome you to join the CertainT Tagged Universe, where virtually any material (recycled polyester, wool, leather, cotton, down or feather) can now be tagged with a unique molecular barcode. Once applied, the tag will remain on the substrate, and enable source verification in a finished product.
“Now, in the hyper-connected and ever evolving world, transparency is the new power.”

However, transparency is not just a supply chain or compliance issue, but also a marketing issue. Todays “omni consumer” reads the “label”, cares about the impact of products on the environment, supports “farmers”, and are purchasing products based on quality, functionality and responsibility. They want “trusted information” about the source, ingredients and process involved in the creation of the products they purchase and consume.

Global Sustainability and Traceability
As Vice President of Textiles for Applied DNA Sciences, I have been very fortunate to travel and meet many people from around the world. As part of my recent visit to GHCL‘s manufacturing facility in Vapi, India, I was invited to take part in a tree planting ceremony. This demonstrates our commitment to maintaining a clean, safe and sustainable environment, as well as a conscious effort to bring meaningful, responsible and traceable solutions to the retailers and brands that depend on products that can be verified from source to shelf.

Consumers want to know the facts
MeiLin Wan: Consumers are more curious and want to know where the products and raw materials that make up the finished goods are sourced. They demand the facts and supporting data points to clearly understand the journey a finished good has travelled and get to know the folks that have taken part in making the product.
We all love a good story with interesting characters and plots and that’s exactly what today’s complex supply chains are, a full rich storyline that has a beginning, middle and end.

Held every three years, NPE attracts more than 65,000 plastics professionals and leading suppliers of emerging technologies. Tom specifically worked in the exhibit booth of our industry partner Techmer PM, Clinton, TN.
Techmer PM is a respected producer of value added colors and additives for the plastic and fiber industries and a long-standing customer of Applied DNA’s SigNature® molecular tags. Tom interfaced with companies interested in supply chain integrity and sustainability. He had the chance to present Applied DNA’s core platform – CertainT: Tag-Test-Track

Sourcing Journal Event sponsored by Lenzing and Inspectorio, May 7, 2018
By MeiLin Wan, VP Textiles
Sustainability in textiles begins with the fiber and concludes with rigorous end-to-end solutions for the supply chain. This was one of the themes at Sourcing Journal’s 'Cocktails and Conversations' evening event in Hong Kong. We mingled with many industry thought leaders and gained new insights on the importance of traceability as part of the sustainability conversation. With proof-of-origin, the transparency to the end-consumer and story of where our fibers, yarns and fabrics come from happens naturally.

"Innovating for the Digital Supply Chain's New Normal"
The first ever Sourcing Journal Summit was held in Hong Kong and we were very pleased to sponsor the event. The "new normal" is changing rapidly with consumers wanting to know more about where products come from, as well as changes in how and where they buy their products. The “omni-consumer” is powerful and retail has to adapt to these changes by finding faster, more innovative ways to connect with the omni-consumer. This entails finding
more cost effective ways of promoting, designing, producing and delivering products to the consumer.
Spencer Fung, CEO of Li & Fung, used a great analogy: the story of the Hare and Tortoise. While the “slow and steady” approach previously worked in the textile industry, the “new normal” in retail demands the speed of the hare to captivate, capture, communicate and in some cases, collaborate with the end user. Some retailers have been working with vloggers to create new products and brands based on the logic that they have loyal, targeted followers on YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter. The sooner retailers and brands realize that the digital world has created the need for digital supply chains, the better.
